The Four Power Houses
The angular houses — the 1st (Ascendant), 4th (IC), 7th (Descendant), and 10th (Midheaven) — are the most powerful positions in the chart wheel. They correspond to the four great angles: the rising point, the lowest point of the sky, the setting point, and the highest point. Planets in angular houses are prominently visible and actively expressive — they push themselves forward into life with natural authority and influence. Angular prominence is the most significant form of accidental dignity.
The Four Angular Houses
| House | Angle | Life Domain |
|---|---|---|
| 1st House | Ascendant | Self, body, outer appearance |
| 4th House | IC | Home, roots, private self |
| 7th House | Descendant | Partnerships, open enemies |
| 10th House | Midheaven | Career, reputation, authority |
Angular Planets in Practice
A planet within 8° of an angular cusp (especially the Ascendant or Midheaven) is considered angular and gains significant visibility in the native's life. The closer to the exact angle, the stronger the effect. A person with Saturn angular (on the Ascendant or Midheaven) consistently manifests Saturnian qualities — seriousness, discipline, ambition, or restriction — as prominent public themes. When a transiting planet moves to an angle, it activates the entire chart for a period, bringing that planet's themes into unusually prominent expression.
