Vedic Calendar System
The Panchang is an ancient Vedic almanac that tracks five key elements of time -- Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana, and Vara (day). Used for millennia by scholars and astrologers, it provides the foundation for determining auspicious timings, religious observances, and planetary influences for each day.

Panchang, derived from the Sanskrit words Pancha (five) and Anga (limb), is the traditional Hindu calendar system that provides five essential elements of time for every day. These five limbs are Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), and Karana (half of a Tithi).
Tithi represents the lunar day and is determined by the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month, divided into two Pakshas (fortnights) -- Shukla Paksha (waxing) and Krishna Paksha (waning).
Nakshatra refers to the lunar mansion or constellation the Moon occupies. There are 27 Nakshatras in Vedic astrology, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac.
Yoga is calculated from the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon. There are 27 Yogas, each carrying specific qualities that influence the auspiciousness of the day.
Karana is half of a Tithi. There are 11 Karanas in total, with some being fixed and others movable, each having its own characteristics for determining favorable activities.
Consulting the Panchang helps in planning important events such as weddings, housewarming ceremonies, business launches, and religious rituals. The auspicious timings like Abhijit Muhurta and the avoidance of Rahu Kaal are integral to the Vedic way of life. Sunrise and sunset times also mark the transition of Tithis and other elements, making precise timing essential for observances.
Beyond daily planning, the Panchang forms the backbone of Vedic astrology. The Nakshatra position of the Moon at the time of birth determines one's Janma Nakshatra, which is foundational for horoscope calculations, Dasha systems, and compatibility matching.
