The Chart for a Specific Moment
A horoscope (जन्मकुण्डली, Janma Kundali) is the astrological chart drawn for a specific moment in time and place on Earth — most commonly the moment of birth. The word comes from Greek: horos (time) + skopos (observer). It shows the precise positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets in the zodiac and relative to the horizon, forming the basis for all astrological interpretation. The colloquial use of 'horoscope' for Sun-sign forecasts is a dramatic oversimplification of the actual chart.

Reading a Horoscope
A horoscope is read in layers: first the Ascendant (the rising sign at birth), which sets the house framework; then the Sun and Moon signs for core identity and emotional nature; then personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars) for communication, relationships, and drive; finally outer planets and house lords for life themes. In Vedic astrology, the Ascendant lord (lagna lord) is paramount — its condition colours the entire chart's capacity to deliver results.
