What Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga Means
Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga (पञ्च महापुरुष योग) — the "five great person combinations" — are the most celebrated individual planet yogas in Jyotish. Each arises when one of five planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) is in its own sign or exaltation in a Kendra house (1, 4, 7, or 10). The result is an individual of exceptional quality in the domain of that planet — a genuinely outstanding person in their field.
The Five Mahapurusha Yogas
| Yoga | Planet | Quality Given |
|---|---|---|
| Ruchaka | Mars | Warrior, commander, fearless |
| Bhadra | Mercury | Intellectual, eloquent, analytical |
| Hamsa | Jupiter | Spiritual, wise, royal bearing |
| Malavya | Venus | Charming, artistic, prosperous |
| Shasha | Saturn | Disciplined, powerful, austere |
How to Confirm a Mahapurusha Yoga
Verify three conditions: the planet must be in its own sign (Swakshetra) or exaltation (Uccha); it must be in a Kendra house (1, 4, 7, or 10) from the Lagna; and it must not be severely afflicted by malefics or combust. A combust or deeply debilitated planet fails the test even if house-placed correctly. Check the Navamsha too — the planet's D-9 dignity should support its D-1 placement. The yoga activates most powerfully during the planet's own Mahadasha.
