What Retrograde Actually Means
Retrograde (Vakrī — वक्री in Sanskrit) describes a planet that appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth's vantage point. No planet physically reverses — it is an optical effect of orbital geometry. Yet astrologers across traditions treat retrograde as significant: the planet's energy turns inward, intensifies, and often operates with delayed or unexpected results. In Vedic astrology, a retrograde planet (Vakri) is considered powerful — sometimes giving results like an exalted planet.
Retrograde by Planet
| Planet | Retrograde Duration | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury | ~3 weeks | 3–4x per year |
| Venus | ~6 weeks | Every 18 months |
| Mars | ~10 weeks | Every 2 years |
| Jupiter | ~4 months | Annually |
| Saturn | ~4.5 months | Annually |
Retrograde Planets in Your Natal Chart
If a planet was retrograde when you were born, it functions differently than a direct planet of the same type. Natal retrograde planets often develop their themes later in life, work more subtly, and require conscious effort to express. A natal retrograde Mercury may indicate someone who processes information unusually deeply before speaking. Retrograde planets in transit affect us collectively — but they trigger natal retrograde planets with particular personal intensity.
