What the Saptamsha Chart Reveals
Saptamsha (D-7) is the divisional chart for children and creative progeny. Each sign divides into 7 equal parts of 4°17' each. The D-7 chart is examined whenever questions arise about having children, fertility, the relationship with offspring, or creative productivity as an expression of the 5th house. It works alongside the Rashi chart's 5th house and its lord — both must be assessed together.
Assessing Children through D-7
| Factor | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| 5th lord in D-7 | Strength of children's blessing |
| Jupiter in D-7 | General fertility and expansion |
| Malefics in D-7 5th house | Challenges with childbearing |
| D-7 Lagna strong | Good overall progeny prospects |
| Putrakaraka in D-7 | Key indicator of children's nature |
Reading Saptamsha in Practice
For fertility and children questions, always check D-7 alongside D-1. If both the 5th house in D-1 and the 5th house in D-7 are afflicted, challenges with children are more certain. If only one chart is afflicted, there is more hope. Jupiter's placement in D-7 is especially important — a well-placed Jupiter in D-7 often compensates for mild 5th house problems in D-1. The Putrakaraka (Jupiter, or in Jaimini, the planet with the 5th-highest longitude) in D-7 is the single most telling indicator.
