What the Shashtyamsha Reveals
Shashtyamsha (D-60) divides each sign into 60 equal parts of 0°30' each — making it the most sensitive of the Shodashavarga (16 divisional charts). It requires extremely accurate birth time (within 2 minutes) to be reliable. Parashara calls D-60 the most important Varga for assessing the soul's quality and the overall power of the chart. Each of the 60 portions has a specific name and quality, ranging from the most auspicious to the most challenging.
Selected Shashtyamsha Qualities
| Portion Type | Quality |
|---|---|
| Ghora | Very inauspicious, harsh karma |
| Rakshasa | Demonic, destructive tendencies |
| Deva | Divine, virtuous soul |
| Kubera | Wealth, prosperity |
| Indira | Sovereignty, power |
| Laxmi | Great fortune and grace |
Using Shashtyamsha in Practice
D-60 is mostly used by advanced practitioners with highly accurate birth data. Before interpreting D-60, confirm your birth time is precise to within 2 minutes — even a small error shifts the Shashtyamsha positions significantly. The Lagna lord's D-60 position is especially telling for overall life quality and soul disposition. A planet in an auspicious D-60 (Deva, Laxmi, Kubera) delivers significantly better results in its Dasha than one in an inauspicious D-60.
