🪔 Yugadi Traditions in Karnataka

On Yugadi morning (March 19, 2026), Karnataka households wake before sunrise, apply oil bath (Abhyanga Snanam), and gather to eat Bevu-Bella — the sacred mix of neem flowers (bitter) and jaggery (sweet) — symbolising life's inseparable blend of joy and sorrow. Temples and community centres hold Panchanga Sravanam where an appointed astrologer reads the year's forecast. The ritual formally begins the agricultural and spiritual calendar for the year.

How the Kannada Calendar Works

Karnataka uniquely follows two parallel Panchangam traditions — a distinction no competitor explains. Understanding both is essential for correctly dating any Karnataka festival.

Chandramana · Lunar

ಚಾಂದ್ರಮಾನ ಪಂಚಾಂಗ

Moon-based. Months begin with Amavasye (new moon) or Pournami (full moon). Used for all religious festivals, shraddha, and vratas. The Kannada Panchanga issued by Sri Rambhapuri Math uses Chandramana.

  • Yugadi, Gouri Ganesha, Navaratri, Karthika Deepotsava
  • Ekadashi, Amavasye, Pournami observances
  • Marriage muhurta, upanayana, grihapravesa
  • Month names: Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha…
Souramana · Solar

ಸೌರಮಾನ ಪಂಚಾಂಗ

Sun-based. Months begin with solar transit into a new Rashi. Used for Sankranti observances, sun-related rituals. Primarily by Havyaka Brahmin and certain Tulu communities.

  • Makara Sankranti (Jan 15), Karka Sankranti (Jul)
  • Uttarayana (Sun turns north, Jan 15)
  • Mesha Sankranti = solar new year alignment
  • Month names aligned with Rashi: Mesha, Vrishabha…

Panchangam 5 Elements ಪಂಚಾಂಗ

Ghatti & Kukke Subramanya — 2026 Festival Dates

Two of Karnataka's most sacred Subramanya shrines with their 2026 observance dates.

Swayam Vyakta Kshetra · Bengaluru District

Ghatti Subramanya

ಘಾಟಿ ಸುಬ್ರಮಣ್ಯ

Located in Melinajuganhalli village, Doddaballapura Taluk — 60 km from Bengaluru — Ghatti Subramanya is one of the seven Swayam Vyakta Kshetras (self-manifested deity shrines) dedicated to Lord Subramanya in the world. The deity here is not installed by human hands — it is naturally emerged. The temple houses a remarkable dual-idol arrangement: Lord Subramanya faces east and Lord Narasimha faces west, with both idols simultaneously visible via a strategically placed sacred mirror — a phenomenon found at no other temple in South India.

The temple is Karnataka's premier centre for Sarpa Dosha Nivarana (serpent-curse removal rituals) and is frequented by couples seeking children. The Nagapratishtha and Ashlesha Bali rituals here are considered especially potent.

Kukke Subramanya

ಕುಕ್ಕೆ ಸುಬ್ರಮಣ್ಯ

Nestled in the Dakshina Kannada district near Mangaluru, Kukke Subramanya is considered the most sacred Subramanya temple outside Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity Lord Subramanya (Shanmukha) is believed to reside here as Vasuki Sarpaswarupa — the serpent-form god. The temple attracts millions of pilgrims annually and holds Karnataka's most significant Champa Sashti celebrations.

The 6-day Champa Sashti festival in Margashira month includes the dramatic Soorasamharam — an enactment of Lord Murugan's defeat of the demon Tarakasura. On the Sashti day (December 15, 2026), lakhs of devotees throng the temple for the principal worship. The preceding days see Skanda Sashti Kavacham recitations and special abhishekam.

July 2026 marks the start of Adhik Shravana Maas — the intercalary (extra) month inserted into the lunisolar calendar to realign lunar and solar years. All auspicious events (weddings, grihapravesa, upanayana) are strictly avoided during this period. However, Adhik Maas is excellent for charity, prayers, fasting, and visiting temples. November 1 is Kannada Rajyotsava — marking the formation of Karnataka state on November 1, 1956 (from the former Mysore State). The Kannada flag (yellow and red) flies across Karnataka; the state song "Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate" plays in public spaces. December is the Subramanya month for Karnataka. The Champa Sashti (December 15, 2026) — Margashira Shukla Sashti — is simultaneously observed at both Kukke Subramanya (Dakshina Kannada) and Ghatti Subramanya (Doddaballapur). Millions of devotees fast for 6 days (Dec 10–15), recite the Skanda Sashti Kavacham daily, and throng both temples on the Sashti day. The Soorasamharam enactment at Kukke — depicting Murugan's defeat of Tarakasura — is Karnataka's most theatrical religious event of the year.

The Kannada Calendar 2026 year name is Vikrama (ವಿಕ್ರಮ) — the 3rd of the 60 Samvatsaras in the cycle. In terms of civil eras, this is Shaka Samvat 1948 and Vikrama Samvat 2083. Vikrama Samvatsara is associated with valour and is governed by Venus (Shukra).
Karnataka uniquely follows two Panchangam traditions. Chandramana (lunar) governs most festivals — Yugadi, Navaratri, Gowri Habba, Deepavali — and uses lunar month names (Chaitra, Vaishakha…). Souramana (solar) governs Sankranti observances and uses Rashi-based month names (Mesha, Vrishabha…). This dual system is unique to Karnataka and explains why some dates differ between Karnataka and neighbouring states.
Adhik Shravana Maas (intercalary month) in 2026 occurs approximately July–August to realign the lunisolar calendar. During this period all auspicious activities — marriages, grihapravesa, thread ceremony (Upanayana) — are strictly avoided in Karnataka. It occurs once every 2.5–3 years. The month is instead used for intensified religious merit-making: charity, temple visits, fasting, and reciting Vishnu Sahasranama.
Makara Sankranti 2026 falls on January 15 in Karnataka. It is celebrated with the Ellu-Bella exchange — a mix of sesame seeds, jaggery, dried coconut, groundnuts, and sugar candy exchanged between relatives and neighbours with the greeting "ಎಳ್ಳು ಬೆಲ್ಲ ತಿಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಮಾತಾಡು." This is Karnataka's unique Sankranti tradition distinct from Tamil Nadu's Pongal and Andhra's preparations.
Kannada Rajyotsava is always on November 1 — in 2026 it falls on Sunday November 1. It marks the formation of Karnataka state on November 1, 1956 when Kannada-speaking regions were unified. The day sees state-wide flag-hoisting, cultural programmes, and the official award ceremony (Rajyotsava Prashasti).
Ghatti Subramanya (ಘಾಟಿ ಸುಬ್ರಮಣ್ಯ) is located in Melinajuganhalli village, Doddaballapura Taluk, Bengaluru Rural district — approximately 60 km from Bengaluru city. It is one of seven Swayam Vyakta Kshetras (self-manifested Subramanya shrines) and is famous for the unique dual idol (Subramanya + Narasimha visible via sacred mirror) and Sarpa Dosha Nivarana rituals. The Champa Sashti (December 15, 2026) and Brahma Rathotsavam are its principal festivals.
