Situational Strength Beyond Sign
Accidental dignity refers to a planet's strength based on its circumstances in the chart rather than the sign it occupies. A planet in an angular house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) is accidentally dignified — it is prominent and powerful regardless of sign. A planet that is fast in motion, free from combustion, direct, and not closely aspected by malefics is also accidentally dignified. Accidental dignity can partially compensate for essential debility: a planet in detriment but strongly angular can still perform effectively.

Accidental Dignity in Practice
In chart assessment, combine essential and accidental dignity for a complete picture of a planet's effective strength. A peregrine Mercury in the 1st house (accidentally dignified) can still manifest effectively through the personality and self-expression despite lacking sign-based dignity. A Mercury in Gemini (essential domicile) but in the 12th house (accidental debility) has the resources to act well but is hidden or restricted in circumstance. Assessing both levels together is the mark of nuanced traditional astrology practice.
