The Aspect in Formation
An applying aspect is one where the faster-moving planet is moving toward the exact degree of the aspect with the slower planet — the aspect has not yet perfected. In horary and electional astrology, applying aspects describe events or conditions that are coming into being: a promise being fulfilled, a meeting approaching, a deal being made. Applying aspects are generally considered stronger and more active than separating aspects, which describe what has already occurred.
Applying vs Separating
| Type | Direction | Timing | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applying | Moving toward exact | Future | What is coming to be |
| Separating | Moving away from exact | Past | What has already occurred |
| Partile | Exact — same degree | Present | Peak intensity now |
Applying Aspects in Horary
In horary astrology, the applying aspect between significators determines whether a matter will come to pass. If the Moon applies to conjoin the question's significator, the outcome is likely. If the Moon is separating, the opportunity has passed. In natal astrology, planets in applying aspect (especially within 1–2° of exactness) are slightly more intensely experienced than separating ones — the energy is building rather than dissipating. This distinction is especially useful in solar arc and transit analysis.
