The Aspect Receding
A separating aspect is one where the faster-moving planet has already passed the point of exact aspect and is moving away from the slower planet. The aspect's peak influence is behind it. In horary astrology, a separating aspect between significators suggests the matter has already occurred or is passing — the window for action may have closed. In natal astrology, separating aspects still carry their character but represent conditions already somewhat integrated into the psyche.
Separating Aspects in Natal Charts
In natal interpretation, astrologers debate whether applying or separating aspects differ meaningfully. Some hold that applying aspects are more actively felt (the energy is approaching), while separating aspects are more integrated (already woven into the personality). A natal Sun separating from a trine to Jupiter (within 5°) still carries Jupiterian optimism — but it may feel more like a background quality than an active drive compared to an applying trine.
Practical Use in Timing
The applying/separating distinction is most critical in horary and transit work. When tracking a slow-planet transit to a natal planet, note whether it has already reached exactness (separating) or is still approaching (applying). A separating Saturn transit to your natal Moon means the restrictive period is easing; an applying one means the pressure is still building. Always check exact dates in the ephemeris to know where you are in the transit's life cycle.
