What BPHS Is
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) — the "Great Treatise on Natal Astrology by Parashara" — is the foundational text of Vedic astrology. Attributed to sage Parashara, transmitted to his disciple Maitreya, it covers every aspect of Jyotish in over 100 chapters: planets, signs, houses, divisional charts, dashas, yogas, and special Lagnas. All major schools of Vedic astrology trace their roots to BPHS.
Key Topics in BPHS
| Chapter Range | Topics Covered |
|---|---|
| Ch. 1–5 | Planets, signs, creation |
| Ch. 6–10 | Divisional charts (Vargas) |
| Ch. 11–25 | Houses (Bhavas) and their lords |
| Ch. 26–35 | Planetary strength, yogas |
| Ch. 36–50 | Major yogas, Raja, Dhana |

| Ch. 80–100 | Special Lagnas, Ashtakavarga |
How to Study BPHS
The two most reliable English translations are by Girish Chand Sharma and by R. Santhanam — both have merits and disagreements, so compare them. Start with chapters on planets (3-4), houses (11), and Vimshottari Dasha (46). Study each chapter alongside actual charts — theoretical knowledge without chart practice is hollow. BPHS is dense: one chapter studied well over a month is more valuable than rushing through it. It takes years to internalize; treat it as a lifelong reference, not a textbook to finish.
