What Kalsarpa Yoga Means
Kalsarpa Yoga (कालसर्प योग) forms when all seven classical planets (Sun through Saturn) fall between Rahu and Ketu with no planet outside the Rahu-Ketu axis. The chart is "hemmed in" by the serpent. This yoga creates a recurring theme of karmic intensity — obstacles, delays, and sudden reversals that feel fated. It does not guarantee misfortune, but it does require the native to work considerably harder to achieve the same results as others.
12 Types of Kalsarpa Yoga
The type is named by Rahu's house position. Each type carries different emphasis:
- Anant — Rahu in 1st: self-identity struggles
- Kulik — Rahu in 2nd: wealth and family disruption
- Vasuki — Rahu in 3rd: communication and sibling trials
- Shankhapal — Rahu in 4th: domestic instability
- Padma — Rahu in 5th: children, creativity challenges
- Mahapadma — Rahu in 6th: obstacles overcome through service
Does Kalsarpa Yoga Ruin a Chart?
No — context matters. Many highly successful people have Kalsarpa Yoga. Check whether any planet breaks the yoga by being outside the axis, even by a fraction. Examine Rahu and Ketu's house placements and dispositors. If the Mahadasha running is of a planet well-placed in the chart, the yoga's effects are mitigated significantly. Specific remedies — Rahu-Ketu puja, snake temple rituals — are recommended during Rahu or Ketu Mahadasha when the yoga is strongest.
